Three Measurable Learning Outcomes For a Hypothetical Unit of Study

The three measurable learning outcomes I’m choosing are for elementary level (around 3rd and 4th grades). The unit of study is literacy and I’m concentrating on inflection of voice. At this point, students have good reading skills but they sound almost robotic when they are reading out loud. They need to start using different voice inflections when reading and know how to read with different punctuation marks.

Learning outcome 1: Identify punctuation and their meaning.

Learning outcome 2: Recognize / know different voice inflections when reading sentences with various punctuation marks i.e. commas (pause), question marks (their voice goes up), exclamation points, and etc.

Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate various inflections when reading different passages.

  1. You made an excellent point about how students at that grade level sound almost like robots. I never thought of that before, and you're right. These learning outcomes are fantastic!I am looking forward to next week's blog post on how you will implement assessment for these outcomes! Have you used this before in a class?

  2. I do a lot of volunteer work at my daughter's elementary school and most of the time I work with the 3rd and 4th graders on their reading. We are all working on different activities to see what really helps them and what really doesn't work. We're trying to develop a system that is efficient in helping them in this area.

  3. Like Kai I never realized that we do sound like that at that age and grade level. It will be interesting to see what you guys come up with.
